Residential Address & Shipping Surcharges

Easyship is able to provide prepaid coverage for users to avoid any Residential Address Fees charged to their account post-delivery using our Residential Address Identifier. This also means that the cost of this coverage can be included in the shipping cost to the recipient when using Easyship Rates at Checkout.

In this guide, we will explain what a residential surcharge is and how to avoid unexpected adjustment charges on your Easyship account.

What we'll cover

Residential Surcharges

Residential Surcharges are an added fee that certain carriers add post-delivery for shipments that are delivered to a residential address. A residential address is identified in general as a house or apartment where the driver has to physically go to the door of the residence. This could be a collection or delivery to a home, including a business operating out of a home that does not have an entrance open to the public. Commercial buildings with a doorman or loading docks are not considered residential. Other restrictions do apply as per the carrier's own definitions.

The feature can be used in two different ways.

Pre-Pay When Manually Creating a Shipment

When creating a shipment, it is now possible to mark the destination address as residential as per the below screenshot.

Adding the shipping address in the Easyship Dashboard

For US and Canada:

  • If the destination is marked as residential: Easyship will rely on the Easyship Residential Identifier to confirm if an address is residential or not. If we confirm that the address is non-residential, there will be no charge or adjustment to the shipment.

  • If the destination is not marked as residential, but Easyship Residential Identifier confirms that the address is residential, a notification will be shown to highlight this.

For the rest of the world:

  • If the user marked the address as residential the residential surcharge will be added to the shipment at a discounted price.

  • If the address is not marked as residential, no added surcharge will be added to the shipment but an adjustment may be added by the courier post-delivery if the shipment is deemed to be sent to a residential address.

Pre-Pay Via Shipping Rules

You are able to add a shipping rule to always include residential address fees when they apply to your shipments. This way you will never receive any adjustment for your shipments post-delivery for residential surcharges.
