Easyship now syncs Shopify orders at the Fulfillment Order (FO) level rather than the order level. This article explains what a Fulfillment Order is, how FO-level sync works in Easyship, and answers common questions about the change.
What Is a Fulfillment Order?
A Fulfillment Order (FO) is Shopify's internal unit for grouping the items in an order that ship together. Shopify automatically splits a single order into multiple Fulfillment Orders at checkout when it includes any of the following:
- Preorder and one-time-purchase products in the same order
- Subscription and one-time-purchase products in the same order
- Products shipping from different locations
- Products belonging to different shipping profiles
From the buyer's side, this is invisible — they make one purchase. On the merchant side, Shopify creates a single order that contains multiple Fulfillment Orders within it.
How FO Sync Works in Easyship
Easyship syncs each Fulfillment Order as its own individual shipment. If a Shopify order contains three FOs, you'll see three separate shipments in Easyship, numbered to show their place in the sequence — for example, 1/3, 2/3, and 3/3.
Each of these shipments shares the same Order Number, which is the common factor tying them back to the original Shopify order. Use the Order Number to group or locate all shipments belonging to one order.
What Happens to My Existing Orders?
Orders already synced to Easyship are not re-synced or affected by this change. Fulfillment Orders belonging to orders already in your Easyship account are skipped, so you won't see duplicate shipments. Only new FOs going forward will sync under this logic.
Shipping Rules at the FO Level
Shipping Rules now evaluate and apply at the Fulfillment Order level, since each FO is treated as one Easyship shipment. Any rule that previously applied to a full order synced from Shopify will now apply to each FO individually.
If your rules were built around the legacy one-order-to-one-shipment flow, review them to confirm they still behave as expected. This is especially relevant for rules that reference order-level totals (like item count or order value), since these values may now be evaluated per FO rather than across the whole order.
Fulfillment Status Sync
Fulfillment status and tracking details are sent back to Shopify at the FO level, not the order level as a whole.
When all FOs on an order are marked Fulfilled, Shopify automatically marks the whole order Fulfilled. Until then, the order remains in Partially Fulfilled status.
Ship From Address
Ship From address sync from Shopify is not included in this release. Continue to use your Easyship addresses and Shipping Rules to assign the Ship From address for each shipment.
FAQs
What happens if I manually split or merge a Fulfillment Order in Shopify after it's synced?
Easyship doesn't currently sync manual changes made in Shopify after the fact. All Fulfillment Orders available at checkout are synced automatically when the order is placed. Any changes made to a Shopify Fulfillment Order afterward need to be made manually on the corresponding Easyship shipment as well.
What happens if I update a Fulfillment Order's status in Shopify later — for example, putting it on hold?
Easyship doesn't currently pick up status changes made in Shopify after the Fulfillment Order has already synced. If this happens, delete the shipment in Easyship and re-run the sync to bring it up to date.
Will my Shopify store location be synced as the Ship From address?
No. Ship From addresses are still set based on your addresses and Shipping Rules in Easyship — they aren't synced from Shopify at this time.
How will delivery dates and Shop Promise details show up?
These show up per Fulfillment Order. Shopify sends this data at the Fulfillment Order level, and Easyship syncs it as-is so you have it as a quick reference.
Will I see duplicate shipments?
No. Fulfillment Orders that belong to orders already in your Easyship account are skipped, so they won't create duplicate shipments.
