This article provides an overview of the HS Code system and explains how to assign HS Codes to your saved products on Easyship.
What is an HS Code?
The Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System, commonly known as HS Codes, HTS Codes, or Tariff Numbers, is a 6- to 14-digit code that classifies products for customs purposes. Managed by the World Customs Organization (WCO), the HS Code system is updated every five years.
HS Codes are listed on the commercial invoice and used by customs authorities to determine the contents of parcels and calculate any applicable duties.
Breakdown of an HS Code
- Chapter: the first two digits
- Heading: the next two digits
- Subheading: the third two digits
For example, HS Code 6103.10 breaks down as:
- 61 = Articles of apparel and clothing accessories, knitted or crocheted
- 6103 = Men's or boys' suits, jackets, blazers, etc.
- 6103.10 = Men's or boys' suits made of knitted or crocheted textile materials
The more digits added, the more specific the classification becomes.
Benefits of Custom HS Codes
- Accurate Product Declaration: Helps customs quickly determine shipment contents, aiding in faster customs clearance.
- Duty Rate Calculation: Duty rates depend on the HS Code, origin country, destination, and local regulations. Using the correct HS Code ensures accurate duty calculation.
Choosing the Right HS Code
Easyship's dashboard integrates the full database of 6-digit HS Codes from the World Customs Organization, making it easy to search by description or code. You can also find HS Codes on the WTO Tariff Database.
Note: Variants may exist between countries, so be as specific as possible when declaring customs information.
Existing Easyship Categories
If you're unsure which HS Code to use, Easyship provides pre-loaded categories. These categories automatically assign an appropriate HS Code for product declaration, just like the previous system.
How to use Custom Codes on Easyship
1. Search HS Codes or Category: Easyship provides the search feature for HS Code. You can search the HS Code by description or numerical code.
2. Auto-calculate Duties: Once an HS Code is selected, duties are automatically calculated based on the shipment’s origin and destination.
3. Display HS Code on the Commercial Invoice: The selected HS Code will be shown on the commercial invoice after you create a shipment.
4. Add HS Code to Saved Products: Each saved product can have an assigned HS Code. Adding full product details in advance will streamline the shipment creation process.
